Estepona is a lovely beachside town to the west of Marbella. Its Old Town is a charming maze of white streets lined with colourful pots of flowers. Its botanical gardens boast one of Europe’s finest collection of orchids and its own indoor waterfall. It also has nearly 30 beautiful murals which lead you though the town. Last but not least, you’ll love the restaurants, bars and beach bars in Estepona.
Estepona is being touted as “the new Marbella”. It has improved so much in recent years and has a lovely feel. It is a proper Spanish town, which caters to tourists but really retains its own identity.
There are lots of great events throughout the year. Highlights include Vive sus Calles in March, where a range of activities take place in the streets. We’re looking forward to the kids’ activities, live music and a tapas route around the town. The Estepona Feria is in July, with flamenco, music, dancing and fairground rides. In August there’s an amazing Ham Festival where you can sample the best Spanish ham and enjoy live music and an amazing atmosphere. This is a brilliant town for a holiday.
The Estepona Region
As well as being a town, Estepona is a district. The district stretches from the edge of San Pedro to the boarder with Casares. It contains a number of lovely places for a holiday. Here are some of our favourites –
This area is located between the towns of Marbella and Estepona, between Guadalmina and Guadalmansa. It boasts the popular Melia Hotel Sol, with its golf courses and great facilities for kids and families. It also includes the Atalaya Golf and Country Club, an excellent bilingual school, as well as a lovely residential area which has many holiday rental apartments and villas.
El Paraiso and Benavista
El Paraiso is a large urbanisation with an excellent golf course and bowls club. It is in a stunning valley and stretches from the golf course in the hills down to the busy commercial area by the coastal road. Benavista is an apartment complex and commercial centre within El Paraiso. The area is popular with golfers that want to be within easy reach of golf courses and families who want a safe place within easy reach of everything for their kids.
Benamara is the urbanisation on the beachside of El Paraiso and Benavista. It is an excellent location, as you’re close to both the sea and all the amenities in Benavista. There are popular developments such as Benamara Gardens, which is located on a pretty cobbled street. It has a shared pool and bar and is just a few minutes walk down to the beach and within easy walk of bars, restaurants and shops. It also boasts the lovely development of Hacienda del Sol, with its 5 pools, gym, padel tennis, lovely gardens and 24 hour security. This is a lovely area for holiday makers who don’t want to drive.
This is a small town within the municipality of Estepona, very close to San Pedro. It is surprisingly unspoilt when you get to its centre, with a little church, Town Square, school and plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants. This is a good place for families with plenty of playgrounds and two big indoor play centres – Mundo Mania and Kidz Kingdom. There are several supermarkets, a garden centre and petrol station close to the main road. Head into Cancelada itself for a surprising Spanish village feel and some excellent places to eat, drink and relax.
This area is to the west of the El Paraiso Golf Course. There are several developments with mature gardens and pools. There’s also a great tennis club with restaurant. There are lots of great places to eat and things to do in the area and it’s close to Cancelada.
Guadalmansa Playa is a lovely beachside area with a peaceful park, which includes a historic tower. There are some beautiful developments in this area, which feature state of the art facilities and mature gardens. There are bars, restaurants and shops nearby, including the popular Tikitano and a short section of promenade.
Selwo and La Resina
One of the many things to do in the Estepona area is to visit the safari park and zoo at Selwo. In this area there are lots of lovely holiday rental properties in a very tranquil setting. There is also the La Resina Golf & Country Club, with a 9 hole course with a lovely club house. Around the course there are peaceful residential developments and pretty countryside.
